an important tribe has been deleted... please see this post
tribes.tribe.net/f662b359-...dbd92d0549

It was a tribe for Palestinian supporters against Zionism. Tribe said it's anti-Semitic which is crap. It's anti-Zionist which is not the same thing at all!

without knowing the context its difficult to comment. but its rather like saying the free tibet tribe is "anti" chinese. its smack of double standards. surely its about freedom? tribe has been screwed up for years.

Too bad we cannot see the tribe before it was deleted. It's easy to automatically take a stand in favour of the deleted moderator, but we cannot tell what were the views advocated there.

In any case, Tribe.net certainly shouldn't have deleted the tribe!

I was a member of the tribe and I didn't see any anti-jewish statements there. It's just another American fuck-up!

sounds like the common reactionary response whenever some moneyed group takes over a failing business--and don't kid yourself, tribe.net nearly went the way of the dodo bird (and i still don't think they're out of the woods.)

so any suggestions? pointing out the over-reaction or at least mis-use of terms (wouldn't be the first time for them?) if they show their political colors to be "red state" (for those who don't know the usa slang, this means politically & socially conservative) tribe's main user base in san francisco will probably abandon them and they'll be done for. no users = no basis for ad-rates or people to click on ad-links = no income.

i looked up the word *semitic* to see if i was correct in my understanding of the word and apparently i tend to understand it in a more "european" way than an american one:

    from the cambridge dictionaries online:
    reference: dictionary.cambridge.org/define.asp
    Semitic adjective
1 relating to the race of people that includes Arabs and Jews, or to their languages:
Hebrew and Arabic are Semitic languages.
    See also anti-Semitic at anti-Semitism.

    2 OLD USE Jewish

3 describes races such as the Babylonians and Phoenicians that existed in ancient times

    merriam webster online (american dictionary):
    reference: www.merriam-webster.com/dictio...semitic
    Se·mit·ic adjective
    Etymology:
German semitisch, from Semit, Semite Semite, probably from New Latin Semita, from Late Latin Sem Shem
    Date: 1813

1 : of, relating to, or constituting a subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic language family that includes Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and Amharic
2 : of, relating to, or characteristic of the Semites
    3 : jewish

what's interesting is if you look up SEMITES in the same american dictionary you get this:
    reference: www.merriam-webster.com/dictio...semites
    Semite noun
Etymology: French sémite, from Sem Shem, from Late Latin, from Greek Sēm, from Hebrew Shēm
    Date: 1848

1 a: a member of any of a number of peoples of ancient southwestern Asia including the Akkadians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Arabs
b: a descendant of these peoples
2: a member of a modern people speaking a Semitic language

so there's some problems with saying that pro-palestinian is anti-semitic--palestinians are semites.
not to mention that there are many AMERICAN jews who are anti-zionist (i've dated at least 2 who qualify--one of them even lived in israel for a while.)

admittedly, since we can no longer see the text in dispute we can only debate concepts.
but people (mostly americans, i think) need to understand what the TRUE concept of being anti-semitic is--if arabs are semites then it can't just mean anti-israeli or jew.
